Google Analytics is a tool provided by Google that allows you to track, measure and report on your website traffic.
Website traffic are users (people) that come to your site, they can come from a range of channels, such as:
- Organic traffic (SEO traffic)
- Paid traffic (AdWords and Bing Ads)
- Social media traffic (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc)
- Referral Traffic (Traffic from other websites excluding places in this list)
- Email (From email marketing)
Tracking Code & Tags
There two ways in which you typically track website traffic, these are with some tracking code or you manage it through tags, which are also essentially code.
By installing (often just copy and paste into the source code) tracking code on each page of your site, you can then see a huge range of data about that traffic.
Data & Reports
Google Analytics and indeed other Analytics programs like Adobe Analytics don’t just show you how many people came to your site and from where… They show you all sorts of things about what they did while on your site, such as:
- How long they stayed
- How many pages they visited
- What links they clicked
- If they played a video
- What page they landed on and exited from
