Direct Ranking Factor: Strong

Internal links are links that point from and to pages within the same site / typically this is also on the same domain.

Links allow users and robots to navigate your site and find your content.


We covered this in the core concepts section of this guide, authority comes through backlinks to your site.

The specific pages, on your site, backlinks point to are entry points for authority to your site. From there, that authority flows through your internal linking structure to other pages, providing pages without backlinks some authority.

As such internal linking plays or at least can play a significant role in the SEO of a site.

Anchor Text

You should also be familiar with this term; the ‘anchor text’ is the text used in a text-based link. For example; in this link internal linking (to a longer guide on the topic) the anchor text is ‘internal linking’.

Using a keyword that the page being linked to is targeting within this text is called using ‘keyword rich anchor text’. This helps to build relevance between the page being linked to and its target keywords.

Relative Vs Absolute

A relative link does not include the domain within it, for example:
