Step 1.39: Keyword Rankings Software

Core Concepts | Tracking Performance | Keyword Ranking Software

We have introduced the concept of these and talked a little bit about them so far, so you should be familiar with what these are.

Keyword Ranking Software

To get keyword ranking data, you will need a tool to track your keywords, there are many tools that do this such as Raptor.

Checking keywords manually is inaccurate, subject to a range of local or environmental factors and hugely inefficient. Because of this, you need specific keyword ranking tools to do this for you.

This software is pretty simple, and most will provide you with the following options:

  • Specify frequency of checks (daily, weekly, monthly)
  • Specify the Search Engines you want to check (Google.co.uk, Google.com, Bing.com.au, etc)
  • Specify how many pages deep into Google you want to look (typically 10 pages or up the organic position 100)
  • Label keywords – to enable you to more effectively report on them

Keyword Ranking Data

Keyword rankings do one of three things:

  • Improve
  • Stay the same
  • Worsen

So, when you look at your ranking data you will often see green up or red down arrows indicating whether a keyword has moved up or down the SERPs.

Looking at this data over longer periods provides a better picture of how things are looking. Keywords will fluctuate to some degree, what’s important is an upward trend over time.
