Step 1.13: The Algorithm

Core Concepts | Search Engines | The Algorithm

An algorithm is process or set of rules that are followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer.

Google’s Algorithm

Typically, when people in SEO talk about ‘The algorithm’, the emphasis is on ‘The’… Because they are talking about Google’s algorithm, which is the only one that really matters in SEO.

Google’s algorithm reviews the data within their index to determine what pages should be shown in the organic SERPs for any given search query.

As mentioned in the section on SERPs, many factors come into play outside of your control such as the device the user is on, their location, their search history, etc. The algorithm considers all of these things in addition to the SEO of your site.
