Step 2.26: Types of Backlink

Basic Concepts | Off-Page SEO Components | Backlinks

Direct Ranking Factor: High

There aren’t many types of backlink and typically we see just two in most backlink profiles, but there are a few other types to consider.

Standard Backlinks

You can make an image or text into a link, ideally you want to have more text links than image links.
That said, having a mix of the two is ideal, it looks more natural.

Text

With text links we want to optimise the anchor text of that link to include target keywords of the page being linked to.

Images

With image links we want to optimise the text within the alt attribute of the link to include target keywords of the page being linked to.

Redirections

If a page on another site redirects to a page on your site, this could be considered a type of backlink in the broader sense of the term. In fact, this will send almost of the authority the linking page has into your site.

Canonical Links

If a canonical tag on a page external to your site, links to your site, this is a type of backlink. This is also much more powerful than a standard text or image link, as they pass on most of the authority to your site.

Widget Links

Although these are really a subset of a standard link, they are very popular due to their use in link building. This is where you provide a ‘widget’, it could a mortgage calculator or another simple tool that other sites can embed. Often these come with a link back to your site from within the widget.
