In links (Unique Follow)
The number of unique links (one per page) pointing to each URL. If a page has multiple follow links to the same URL, we count this as one ‘unique follow’ link.
This is valuable to know as Google typically only considers the first link on a page to any URL. A page may have 1,000 in links, but only 100 unique follow in links. This can affect the authority a page receives depending on whether those links are ‘follow’.
Authority only passes through follow links, as such you want your most valuable pages to have the most unique follow in links.
Within the column for ‘in links (Unique Follow)’, there is only one type of value returned for this which is as follows:
A number between 0 and infinity
The examples below show how this data can be used for SEO.
Because of the way we count these unique ‘follow in links’, they also represent how many pages link to a URL. You can use this data to help identify a type of linking structure. Such as:
- Pages linked to from every page
- Pages linked to from just one page
This number is the total amount of links pointing to the URL on a row.
In this case, we only count one follow link from any URL, so if a page links to a URL 5 times, we would that as 1 link. We count links regardless if any of the following is true or not:
- If the page being linking to is indexable or not
- If the page being linking to is canonical or not
- If the link is set to be ‘nofollow’
- If the link is set to be ‘follow’
We look at the first link on a page when determining what link to count as this is most similar to how Google crawl and scrape a page’s internal links.
