Benefits of Meta Data
This is scraped from every page but is the text of the Meta Keywords of a page. The Meta Keywords is not something that Google factor into their algorithm when determining keyword rankings. Bing currently use this data, if organic traffic from Bing is important to you, this data will be of some use.
Within the column for ‘Meta Keywords’, there four values that can be returned for this which are as follows:
Contents on the Meta Keywords tag
When the contents of the Meta Keywords tag is empty
When the Meta Keywords tag is not present on a HTML/Text page
If the URL is not a HTML/Text page or is inaccessible
This is scraped from every page but is the text of the meta keywords of a page.
This is the content of the meta keywords tag, scraped from the URL, we collect the data from this tag highlighted in red font in the below example:
- <meta name="keywords" content="example keyword,only used for bing,really broad term”/>
This is taken from the first tag of this kind we find on the page and in the correct location, if there are more than one version of these tag on a page.
If there is just one version of the meta keyword tag on a page, we scrape the contents of this tag, regardless of whether the tag is in the wrong part of the source code. Even if the tag has other code-based implementation problems we may still be able to scrape the contents of the tag successfully.
The examples below show how meta keywords data can be used for SEO.
Its not good to overuse keywords within this tag, adding one to dour keywords is more than enough. Scraping meta keyword data from a site can reveal pages where there is excessive keyword usage within this tag.
As mentioned, Bing use this tag and so there is potentially some value in keeping or optimising the tags on a site if organic traffic from Bing is substantial enough.
Scraping this data from competitor sites is often a great way to glean their keywords more quickly and easily than by evaluating page titles. Use this data in a competitor keyword analysis, or content audit of a competitor site.
